Scrap Auto Batteries

Scrap Auto Batteries

What is the value of old automobile batteries? According to scrapmonster.com on October 24, 2014 the current pricing is about 40 cents per pound. Thieves that are targeting ‘scrap my car’ companies and other places where you sell a car for cash is on the rise. Let’s take a closer look at what these scrap auto batteries are actually worth. I visited the Sears website to approximately calculate what the actual scrap price would be based on three varieties:

  • DieHard Gold Size 24F Battery: 43lbs. @ .40/lb = $17.20
  • DieHard Gold Size 35 Battery: 38lbs. @ .40/lb = $15.20
  • Plus Start Automotive Battery GS 65: 38.50lbs. @ .40/lb = $15.40

To summarize, it seems that the average scrap price for a battery for an old junk car or scrap vehicle is probably going to be $15 on a low-average. On October 21, 2014, Eric Hrin posted a story on the dailyreview.com about a crook that was preying on ‘scrap car for cash’ sites in PA. Is it really worth trespassing into one of these places where you sell a car for cash to obtain a few used auto batteries to scrap? Here are the highlights of the report: “A Canton man has been charged with taking five used car batteries from the Canton Auto Scrap Yard. Darren Killian, of Troy Street, has been charged with theft, a misdemeanor. Police said Killian initially said he was only spotlighting for deer in the area of the scrap yard.  The victim said that on the previous night, he had seen a white Dodge pick-up truck being driven down the road by his residence. He went to his junkyard and found many of the vehicles had been tampered with. The victim told police that multiple batteries were missing. The victim said that Killian had called him and admitted that he had taken items from the scrap yard. Killian said he removed 5 batteries from the scrap yard. Killian also told police he apologized for his actions. Killian’s unsecure bail was set at $15,000 and was posted.” This guy essentially will like receive fines in addition to having the story posted on the web (which is embarrassing) for about 75 bucks for the theft from the scrap my car yard. It doesn’t appear to be worth it in my opinion. The complete story is available at this link: http://thedailyreview.com/
