In a recent article in Scrap titled ‘Gaining Gorund’, Joe Pickard and Bernie Lee explained the following: “In 2015, the scrap and recycling market was really struggling and the industry had significantly consolidated. In 2016, there was somewhat of a reversal of fortune as supply and demand began to stabilize. The oil market was certainly in a state of flux as far as commodities go. The prices per barrel which once were $100 were seen in West Texas at lows of about $25. This pattern continued across other segments including ferrous. The price for No.1 heavy metal was near $160 a gross ton, roughly 50% lower than the year prior.
The resurgence took place in late-2016 as No.1 heavy metal rebounded to $250. This rise was also seen in metal, oil, and various others. The Dow was up by 25% despite modest economic conditions and political volatility. The U.S. election surprisingly gave the markets a boost through campaign promises to rebuild the infrastructure, lower corporate taxes, eliminate many regulations, and to renegotiate better (fairer) deals on trade overseas.
