Scrap Recycler Fired

Scrap Recycler Fired

We are back for another blog update here just after Thanksgiving. The world of junk car towing and old car scrap rolls on, with the continued low prices in the per ton steel scrap market. Ask anyone who buys old cars or anybody who scraps cars and they will tell you that the market is amid a greater depression than any in recent memory.

Cash 4 Cars Cleveland is who buys old cars in Berea, Twinsburg and Wickliffe. Actually, we handle junk car towing and old car scrap throughout Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga Counties! Our next article illustrates one guy in New York who is paying dearly for recycling. On November 30, 2015 a story on wsws.org by Josh Varlin titled ‘Walmart worker in New York fired for redeeming cans worth $2’ reported the following: “A Wal-Mart in East Greenbush, NY fired a 52-year-old worker Thomas Smith for gross misconduct for redeeming $2 in cans & bottles left in the store. Smith earned $9/hour collecting shopping carts in the parking lot, redeemed the cans after they were left near the recycling machines for over an hour. According to a Wal-Mart spokesman, Smith was fired for taking property inside the store.  Smith, a once homeless father of two, says he was interrogated by security guards and intimidated into signing a statement admitting to the theft, which he couldn’t read without his glasses.

Many bottles and cans in NY have a 5-cent deposit, meaning that Smith was fired for redeeming 40 recyclables, equal to $2. (Company CEO Doug McMillon earned $25M in 2014) Smith was released from prison recently and was nearing the end of his 90-day “probationary period” at Wal-Mart, after which he would be considered a regular employee. Smith has maintained that he disclosed his prior conviction in his application, and that Wal-Mart performed a background check after hiring him. Wal-Mart refused to release the statement which he was coerced into signing by security to Smith, his legal representatives or the Times Union, but eventually released it to the Washington Post. An Illinois resident created a crowdfunding page on GoFundMe, which has raised over $21,000 in less than a week. Most of the donations on the site have been modest, indicating that working people across the country sympathize deeply with Smith’s situation

According to recent data from the Social Security Administration, more than half of Americans earn less than $30,000 a year, putting them at or just above the insultingly low federal poverty line for a family of four.  The complete article is available at this link.

This story is tough to judge, since it is difficult to determine what the truth is. The employee certainly has questionable credibility, as he was recently released from prison and working a $9/hour job despite having two kids. The employer is a typical “corporate employer” who seeks to shield any truth through murky spokespeople and likely has an attorney dictating their every move. The bottom line is that the guy took some abandoned recyclables and redeemed them for two lousy bucks. Hardly seems like reasonable grounds for termination, meaning there is probably much more to the story here.
