Among the newsworthy topics concerning the automobile sector, the price of oil, which dictates the price of fuel, is certainly at a recent low. On December 10, 2015 Robert Wall on wsj.com detailed the following: “Airlines are poised to deliver a higher than forecasted profit this year & may see earnings increase in 2016 with oil prices near seven-year lows. Airlines may generate a record $33 billion in net profit this year as the IATA raised its outlook for a 2nd time recently, representing a net profit of $17.3 billion in 2014. This drop in oil prices, with a Brent barrel below $40/ea. means airlines’ fuel bill this year is 20%+ lower than in 2014 even as consumption rose. Airlines are expected to spend $180 billion on fuel this year.”[1]

On December 8, 2015 a story on fortune.com (submitted from Reuters) titled ‘Why U.S. Oil Prices Are Continuing to Plummet’ discussed the following: “With U.S. crude falling below $37/barrel for the 1st time since 2009, amid fears the world was running out of capacity to store crude as a global glut intensifies. The global oversupply is being compounded by OPEC’s failure last week to agree a production ceiling, with members Iran & Iraq promising to ramp up output & exports next year. Benchmark Brent and WTI futures both fell more than 6% on Monday, and on Tuesday they hit fresh lows last seen during the credit crunch of 2008/09. Brent futures were down 60 cents at $40.13 a barrel. U.S. crude was trading at $36.86 a barrel, down 79 cents from its last statement. The failure to agree to production levels means OPEC’s core members are readying for battle. The market is already heavily oversupplied and consuming almost 2M barrels a day less than it is producing. According to Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC, OPEC has lost control of the oil market and unless something changes that causes demand to overtake the oversupply in the market, the path is the 2008 lows of $35-$38.”[2]
